Carpal Tunnel Release

A surgical procedure performed to relieve symptoms of pain and numbness associated with nerve compression in the carpal tunnel. An incision is made at the heel of the hand. The tissue is carefully dissected to expose the carpal ligament which is the roof the carpal tunnel. The ligament is then incised. Special care is taken to completely divide the ligament and ensure the tunnel is opened.

Common Questions About Carpal Tunnel Release

How is carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosed?

Carpal tunnel syndrome can be diagnosed through Tinel’s test. In this test, the middle of the wrist is tapped to see if there is any numbness or tingling. A nerve conduction study or an EMG can also be performed to confirm a diagnosis.

Are there non-surgical options to treat carpal tunnel syndrome?

Non-surgical options to treat carpal tunnel syndrome include wearing a brace or splint in order to keep the wrist in a neutral position. Physical therapy as well as a steroid injection may help as well.

When should a carpal tunnel release be performed?

If non-surgical treatment options do not alleviate symptoms, a carpal tunnel release procedure may be considered.

How is a carpal tunnel release performed?

A carpal tunnel release is performed by first making an incision at the heel of the hand. The carpal ligament, which is the roof of the carpal tunnel, is identified and then incised.
